For those who are not familiar with the name indie rock: it’s a nickname for (guitar) bands that reside on the outskirts of pop music. And they tend to stay there, looking down on the funny streaks of pop stars and emphasizing the adventurous and wayward character of their own unusual songs. In the 80s hundreds of these kind of brilliant bands saw the light of day. Sonic Youth, Swans, Minutemen, Black Flag, Big Black, Hüsker Dü and many others competed for the silver medal, because the gold medal in that era was irrefutably reserved for our headliner of the 2017 Lokerse Feesten: Pixies.
Pixies are playing in Lokeren! The 80s fans of today are shouting their lungs out when reading the press announcement. And for those who still don’t have a clue what we’re talking about, here’s what Wikipedia should say: Pixies is a loud combo from Boston specialising in a carrot-and-stick policy with razor-sharp pop songs, touching at times but also brutally crushing, mostly in English but sporadically in Spanish. On their five albums between 1987 and 1991 they released a tsunami of spectacular songs that became part of the 80s teenagers’ collective memory. After the Pixies’ split, indie rock evolved and new generations of music lovers danced mainly to their own indie heroes. But when Black Francis reunited with his old comrades many were over the moon.
Sold out concert halls, euphoric reactions, people in their teens, twenties and thirties fighting to obtain a ticket, but also: new albums! Especially ‘Head carrier’ (2016) proves that Francis and co can still produce small eardrum-caressing explosions, mix fine melodies with outbursts of insane racket and demonstrate the touching beauty of noise and distortion. ‘Head carrier’ entered various end of year charts so a new world tour was called for to show fans how they convert this racket into true art. Pixies, ladies and gentlemen, will play in Lokeren
