MULA B
Perhaps you’re not that familiar with Dutch hip-hop and thought: right, let’s look up this MULA B and see if he’s dropped any tracks on the worldwide web? Well, hold on tight to a nearby branch because an XXL surprise awaits you. Not only do you need a compass to find your way through the man’s discography, but an experienced guide seems to us to be no luxury at all. Although he’s only been at it since 2016, Mula B has already rapped together a list of achievements that would take someone else twenty years of training and warming up to match. Incidentally, tracks are more often than not recorded with guests visiting the studio. Goldband, Ronnie Flex, Sticks, S10 and Boef are just a few of the prominent names in Mula’s address book with whom he has collaborated. Yes, we’ve been listening, and that’s how we know his latest release, “Narcopop” (2023) is a sharp take on the sober tales of the harsh street life in The Hague, which apparently bears no resemblance to the idyllic beach town that Harrie Jekkers sang about in 1981 in ‘Oh, Oh Den Haag’ (“beautiful city behind the dunes!”). Cotton candy, ice lollies and beach balls seem to have been replaced by guns, loitering youths and constant turf wars over potential drug-dealing spots. Not a setting that would feature in the adventures of Jommeke, Tiny or The Smurfs, but as a source of inspiration, The Hague apparently does guarantee a host of hip-hop tracks as sharp as a poisoned arrow. Come and experience it live at our Club on Saturday 1 August.
