THE KOOKS
Please excuse us for barging in without knocking, but we must move forward: THE KOOKS are coming to our Grote Kaai on Wednesday 5 August. Haaaa, The Kooks, a warm glow passes through our hearts and minds when we say the name again. Back then, we were still dancing our knees to pieces to the hits of System Of A Down and Korn, but our hearts were happy to remind us that we still melted at the sound of sometimes muscular but more often emotional indie pop. With The Kooks, the Millennials got their own Dexy's Midnight Runners, and young lovers got another reason to look deep into each other's eyes on the dance floor, instead of standing there headbanging and roaring. We don't know how many pregnancies The Kooks' hits have resulted in, but if all those babies from back then, now grown up, and their parents come along, our Wednesday will be sold out after half an hour. In 2006, The Kooks released their debut album ‘Inside in/Inside out’, a record with so many treats that it sounds like an extensive dessert buffet. Deliciously light chocolate mousse (the melancholic “Seaside”, the opener), the creamiest tiramisu imaginable (see the Supergrass-esque “See the world”), perfectly caramelised crème brûlée (listen to the sugary chorus of “Ooh la”), delicious bavarois with a dollop of whipped cream (' She moves in her own way', a song so cheerful that it should have won the Nobel Peace Prize) and, as is often the case with a dessert buffet, after a while everyone moves on to the fresh fruit salad (“Naive”, “If only”, “You don't love me”). Which is just as well, because our eyes are mainly drawn to the bowl of those little boules de Berlin (‘Eddie’s gun’, pretty much the best power pop of the decade). We have to move on, so we leave again, this time through the front door: The Kooks are celebrating their legendary debut album with you, as mentioned, on 5 August. Enjoy!
